Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson decide to go on a camping trip. After dinner and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night, and go to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
Watson replied, "I see millions of stars."
"What does that tell you?"
Watson pondered for a minute.
"Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets."
"Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo."
"Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three."
"Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant."
"Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow."
"What does it tell you, Holmes?"
Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke: "Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent!"
Sometimes, we overlook the obvious. I think that is what the disciples on the Emmaus did. I want you to get the picture.
The time - late in the afternoon on the first Easter Sunday. The place - the Emmaus Road. The Scene - Two weary disciples trudging dejectedly down the seven-mile road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. One week earlier they had welcomed Jesus into the city by lining the streets and waving palm branches, saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord" (Matthew 21: 9).
And at that time what they thought was going to be a continuing celebration became a horrible crucifixion. They had seen the procession of death going up to Golgotha. They had seen the crown of thorns, the jeering, hooting, rabble, the squalor, the infamy, and defeat. They had seen his poor, broken body being taken down when it was all over to be hidden away in a tomb.
All their hopes had been centered on this one man, Jesus. He was to sweep the world clean of so ...
