"God is great, God is good; and we thank Him for our food. By His hands we must be fed, Give us Lord, our daily bread. Amen." We teach our children to pray that prayer, but do we really have any idea just how great God is?

If we can get that truth riveted into our hearts, and imbedded into our souls, and blended into our spirits, it will change our lives. Our God is immeasurably great, and we shall do well if we bow in reverence before His sovereignty.

In 1885 Carol Boberg, a member of the Swedish Parliament, and some of his friends were traveling from an afternoon worship service at a time in the year when everything seemed to be in its richest coloring; the birds were singing in the trees. As they were returning to their homes a thunderstorm began to appear on the horizon. They hurried to find shelter. There were loud claps of thunder, and the lightning flashed across the sky. Strong winds swept over the meadows and billowing fields of grain. However, the storm was soon over, and the clear sky appeared with a beautiful rainbow.

When Boberg reached his home, he opened his window toward the sea. The church bells were playing the tune of a hymn. It was that evening that he wrote a poem which he titled in Swedish - "O Store Gud, (How Great Thou Art).

The poem was set to a Swedish folk tune. In 1907, Manfred von Glehn translated it into German, and five years later a Russian pastor made Russian adaptation. In the early 1920s, the Rev. and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine left their home in England and went to Poland as missionaries. It was there they learned the Russian version of Boberg's song, "O Store Gud." Hine then wrote original English lyrics and made his own arrangement of the Swedish melody. That is how we got "How Great Thou Art."
