If you have your Bible, please turn to Matthew chapter 21. I've entitled the message today, "Presenting the King of Israel."
Well, as you know, today is Palm Sunday. It is the beginning of holy week. We have Palm Sunday, then we have Good Friday. It wasn't Good Friday when it happened because it was horrible Friday. It was terrible. The Messiah was crucified. But then, everything changed on Easter Sunday morning. And so, at the coming of Jesus to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, about two million people were there. The city was teeming with people. It's a very, very important event, the triumphal entry; the event that we call Palm Sunday. Say, "Why do they call it Palm Sunday?"
Because palm branches were used. And palm branches were the universal symbol of triumph and joy and liberation. You know, when a king came back from battle and was victorious, they would have palm branches to welcome him. When an athlete came back from winning the games, they would have palm branches to welcome them. So, palms were well-known to the Jews. And when Jesus came in, they cut down palm branches from the trees, laid them on the road, waved them and praised Him. So, this is an important event. It's recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It's God the Father presenting His Son to the people of Israel.
"When they had approached (Matthew 21, verse 1) Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them, and immediately he will send them.' This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet (the prophet Zechariah): 'SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTE ...
