Title: The Cry of Forgiveness
Author: Samuel Burgess
Text: Luke 23:32-34
INTRODUCTION:
It was just another day in Jerusalem; but on this particular day
the smell of death was in the air. Outside the city walls, just north of the
Damascus Gate, there is a place called Calvary, the Place of the Skull
[Skull Hill]...in what might have been called ''Execution Square''. As
people walked toward that place, they saw 3 crosses standing beside the
highway.
Crucifixion in and of itself was not unusual [this was not the first
crucifixion, and it wouldn't be the last], but this Crucifixion on this day
was unusual. Crucifixion took on a whole new meaning because the
most unusual man who ever lived was being crucified.
[note]> 3 men were about to take their last breath on this earth: 2 men
had no choice in this matter of death. They were CONDEMNED to
die. The Writer of Hebrews makes this very clear later on in
[Hebrews 9:27]- "And it is APPOINTED unto men once to die, but
after this the judgment." A person, from the very moment they are
born, has an appointment with death. [Unless they are saved and are
caught up...]
*One man, the Lord Jesus, CHOSE to die. The Writer of Hebrews
also makes this clear in [Hebrews 9:26,28]-
"...but now once in the
end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of Himself..." Jesus came to this earth to die; to bear the sins of the
world...to take upon Himself the punishment of God for those sins...so
that no one would ever have to die in their sins.
*3 men on 3 crosses; all 3 men died. All 3 crosses have a story to tell.
But One Man (the Man on the middle cross, the Man called Jesus) has
a story that must be told to help us.]
One Cross became a Cross of Rejection
The other Cross became a Cross of Repentance
The Middle Cross is the Cross of Redemption
One Cross became the Cross of a man who died in his sins.
The other Cross became the Cross of a man who died to sin.
