-I hope you have your Bible with you this morning. Go ahead and open to Mark 7. We are studying the Gospel of mark on Sunday mornings in a series I'm calling, A Journey With Jesus. We have learned so much as we've studied the life and ministry of Christ.
-This section, however, marks a bit of a shift for the gospel. For most of the Gospel of Mark, the emphasis is primarily on what Jesus did. However, in this section of scripture, you will find Mark emphasizing what Jesus said. The focus here is more on the teachings of Jesus. And specifically, how He confronts and challenges the Pharisees.
-I'm going to do something a bit different this morning. Normally, we'll read the whole passage and dive in piece by piece. But today, I want to zoom in on a couple of verses that are critical to understanding this passage. READ 6-8 Look at this now, Jesus gets right to the heart of the problem. These people were worshiping God, but they were worshiping in vain. Jesus said, "In vain do they worship me..." These Pharisees had established all sorts of rules and regulations about religion that they had crowded out what it meant to have a real relationship with God.
-*If you've been here as long as I've been here, you'll probably remember a series I preached in 2013 called, Accidental Pharisees. This was a series that God laid on my heart and I knew I had to communicate some important things with our church. The first sermon I preached was called, Confessions of a Former Pharisee, where I admitted that there was a time in my life when I felt like keeping rules and following external standards somehow made me closer to Jesus. It wasn't until I was starting a brand new church in North Georgia, that God tore down a lot of the idols that I had built in my life over the years.
