-Believe it or not, when we come to our text today, we are halfway through the Gospel of Mark. I know it feels like we've been in this study forever, but you should give yourselves a pat on the back, you've made it halfway. This is the 20th message in a series I'm calling, A Journey With Jesus. And today, we come to Mark 8:34-38.

-Remember, Mark's gospel is fast-paced and action-packed. It doesn't have all the details and every story that Matthew and Luke include. Mark's favorite word is "immediately." He is rushing you through some things but he's been moving toward something. And I believe this is what he's been moving toward. This passage is a powerful proclamation of what it means to be a disciple. And that's the question we're asking this morning, What Does It Take to Follow Jesus? READ TEXT

-*There was a famous preacher who traveled the world and observed that parenting styles vary significantly across countries. In some nations, parents emphasize diligence, loyalty, and hard work. Others focus on thorough preparation through education for the future. However, this pastor noted that American parenting is unique. He said American parents primarily teach their children two things: avoid suffering and difficulty at all costs and focus on what makes you happy. This message of avoiding hardship and seeking happiness is pervasive. When children ask their parents for life advice, they often hear, "Do what makes you happy." This advice leads to a pattern where children struggle to commit-constantly changing college majors, hopping from relationship to relationship, and moving from church to church.
