-We took a brief break from our sermon series in the Gospel of Mark to focus on Grow Sunday. But today, we continue our study called, A Journey With Jesus. Remember, Mark's gospel is fast-paced and action-packed. Mark's favorite word is "immediately." It doesn't have all the details and every story that Matthew and Luke include, but it gives us enough to follow the story. Scholars tell us that Mark was the earliest of the four gospels and a recording of the eye-witness account of Peter.

-Today, we come to Mark 9:1-13 and we are basically starting the second half of this gospel. And in our text today we see an event called The Transfiguration. This references the moment when Jesus took His three closest disciples to the top of a mountain and revealed His glory to them. Let's read our text and imagine the scene unfolding. READ TEXT

-The high point in Mark's gospel came in the previous section when Peter proclaimed, "You are the Christ!" Everything in Mark that came before Peter's declaration leads up to it; everything that followed afterward flows from it. But once Peter made his confession, Jesus taught His followers "that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected...and be killed, and after three days rise again." (ON SCREEN) How did Peter respond to this? He tried to rebuke Jesus. But Jesus said, to him, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's" (v. 33).

-When I consider the end chapter 8 and the beginning of chapter 9, I'm reminded of a danger we all face as followers of Jesus. And it's a trap that Peter falls into here in our text. The key thought is this: When you think you have Jesus figured out, just know you're wrong.
