When you study the Old Testament, one of the great themes is God's holiness. The Bible, after all, is not just a story of humanity; it is the story of the One true God.

God is a Spirit, in and of himself infinite in being, glory, blessedness, and perfection; God is all-sufficient, eternal, unchangeable, incomprehensible, everywhere present, God is almighty, knowing all things, and most wise, God is most holy, most just, most merciful and gracious, God is long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. There is but one only living and true God.

Because of who God is in his holiness and perfection, his presence cannot be contaminated by sinful human beings. In Israel's worship of God, the people were separated from God in the temple by a curtain. This curtain was several inches thick and covered the entire entrance into a room called the Holy of Holies. This is where God took up residence in the temple. The curtain was a visual and physical reminder that because of our sin, we cannot approach God, who is Holy, on our own. Access to God was strictly prohibited because of his holiness.

The only person allowed to go behind the curtain was the high priest, and only once a year, on the day of Atonement. And even then, the priest could only enter with blood to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.

Our passage tonight tells us "And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split."

It was not torn by human hands but rather by the hand of God. God was saying to his people that there would no longer be a barrier between him and them. The veil was being removed, and the gates of God's presence were open.
