-We are on A Journey With Jesus as we study the Gospel of Mark on Sunday mornings and today we come to Mark 9:30-41. Remember, in this section of the Gospel of Mark, we are learning what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. What does it look like to be a faithful follower of Christ? Today, Jesus teaches His followers what it means to be great. And, in typical fashion, He teaches that true greatness is not found in the way of the world but in following Christ.

-We are in the middle of Jesus' great discipleship discourse (Mark 8-10). Our Lord is turning upside down the value systems of this world. His teaching is radical and mind-blowing. No wonder "they did not understand." Ours is a world where everything is about me! Jesus died to free us from such slavery. He died to free us to serve and to walk a road of true greatness which is paved with several important truths that lead to concrete action. Let's read our text as we think about, The Way to Be Great. -*I know I may seem a bit old-school to some of you, but I think some of these sports celebrations are a bit out of hand. Every time someone gets a first down or makes a tackle, they have to do some sort of dance. Every time someone gets a base hit or a home run, they perform some type of celebration on base or a special bat flip. Lord knows if someone ever scores a goal playing soccer, there's an enormous celebration (because it happens so little). More and more, we are becoming a society that draws attention to ourselves. We love to be the center of attention. I'm reminded of Muhammed Ali and his famous quote, "I am the greatest!" When it came to boxing, maybe it was true, maybe it wasn't.
