- Find your Bibles and open to Mark 10:17-31. Today, we come to what I believe is one of the most tragic stories in all the Bible. This story is commonly called the story of the "Rich Young Ruler." Of all the people who ever came to the feet of Jesus, this man is the only one who went away worse than he came. And yet he had so much in his favor!

- The Gospel of Matthew tells us he was a young man (Matthew 19:22), The Gospel of Luke tells us he was a ruler, most likely a religious leader of great importance (Luke 18:18), and Mark tells us here that "he had great possessions." This man had everything going for him. But one thing kept him from following Jesus. READ TEXT - PRAY

- *It's interesting to see how different people respond to Jesus. The "Pharisees" constantly confronted Jesus and challenged His authority. No matter how many miracles they witnessed or truths they heard, they refused to believe. Contrast that with the father of the demon-possessed boy in Mark 9 who is desperate to see his son healed. He says, "I believe. Help my unbelief!" The disciples often responded with doubt and confusion of their own. Many times they didn't understand, many times they were afraid, often they were confused. But even in their confusion, they followed Jesus, although imperfectly. Then, I love to see how "children" responded to Jesus. Children flocked to Jesus. They didn't hesitate, they didn't overthink it. They came with childlike trust and open hearts. But then, there's the Rich Young Ruler. His response seems different than everyone else's. Here's a man who had it all - wealth, youth, status, morality. But the young man simply refused to give up the most important thing in his life to follow Jesus. Jesus says, "How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" This man tried to have it all. ...
