Title: Jesus Is Alive! (39)
Series: The Gospel of Mark-a Journey with Jesus
Author: Jim Perdue
Text: Mark 16:1-20

- We have been studying Mark for quite some time; and today, we come
to the end. Mark 16 records the culmination of the entire book, the resection of Jesus. Today, millions and millions of people will gather in churches across America to worship Jesus. Why? Because Jesus is alive! His resurrection is the foundation of our faith, and millions of believers come together to celebrate the hope, the victory, and the eternal life we have through Him.

- *Back in 1992, a strange letter came from the Health and Human Services department to a resident of Greenville County in South Carolina. It read: "Your food stamps will be stopped at the end of March, because we received notice that you passed away. May God bless you. You may reapply if your circumstances change." We find that ridiculously humorous because we've learned that death is inflexible. That person is never going to reapply because their circumstances are never going to change. Death is fixed, and death is final. We know this. If you watched your best friend die with your own eyes, attended their funeral, and saw their body buried, you wouldn't believe anyone who told you a few days later that they saw your friend at Walmart picking up some bread and deodorant. You'd think that person was either sadly mistaken or unusually cruel. But one thing is for sure-you wouldn't believe them for a second. Why? Because dead people don't eat bread or use deodorant. We've learned that death is an unchangeable, unfixable reality. That's what makes the truth of our text today so remarkable. The followers of Jesus had watched their best friend and their greatest hope die a cruel death and be buried in a borrowed tomb. Their despair was rooted in the belief that His death was unchangeable and unfixable. And then-the greatest event in the history of mankind happened. Jesus rose from the grave!*
