Text: Isaiah 9:6-7
When you ask people what peace means to them, you may get a variety of
answers including:
- Peace and quiet
- Freedom from disturbance and fear
- Relief from oppressive thoughts or feelings
- Living in harmony with people
- No wars
- Absence of hostility in relationships
All of these are external in nature and would require some form of manual
intervention. This is one of the reasons why we have a prescription drug
epidemic in our land. People are trying to adjust their lives manually to try
to find some facsimile of Peace, but it doesn't work this way, or better
said, we cannot find lasting peace in this world or on our own. It doesn't
come from the outside.
The PEACE that God brings is internal, in the heart, on the inside. He is
our Peace. As Christians, one of the promises we have is the PEACE OF
GOD. It is a fruit of the Spirit living in us. Without the peace of God, life is
full of anxiety, worry, fear, frustration, control, misery, anger, unforgiveness,
resentment, bitterness, sin, trusting in self, and relying on self.
Before I came to Christ, like most others, I was looking for peace without
knowing I was searching. Trying to find fulfillment or peace in a bottle or a
smoke didn't really work. People have all kinds of vices that use but it's all
the same, they are searching for lasting peace. When you don't know the
Peace of God like I know now, you seek for it in all the wrong places.
Only to find that you need more and more. For me, the day came that I said to
myself, "waking up with a whopping hangover or not remembering what
happened the night before does not work in life. I called my girlfriend at
college when we were dating and said, "I don't know something is
missing. I think we need to learn more about God or something."
I didn't know what I was saying, but God heard it. I finally gave Him something He
could work with. And He rearranged things in my ...
