INTRODUCTION
Take your Bibles this evening and turn with me to Paul's letter to the Galatians. For our guests here this evening, on Sunday nights at Abilene we work our way through books of the Bible. The book we're currently working our way through is Paul's letter to the Galatians in a series titled "No Other Gospel."
- In our first message, the stage was set for our study by giving an introduction and background to when and why Paul wrote this letter.
- In our second sermon, we looked at and learned what the Gospel is and isn't.
- Last week, we listened as Paul shared his testimony of how the Lord saved him and sent him as the apostle to the Gentiles.
Tonight, we are reading Chapter 2 of Galatians, in which we will see Paul as "The Freedom Fighter."
Example:
I was thinking last night as I was working through this message back to Dr. Dondi Costin's sermon this past Faith, Family, and Freedom Sunday when he preached a message about Jesus being a "freedom fighter" - and he was.
Because freedom always comes at a cost.
- It cost Jesus something to purchase it.
- It cost Him his life.
ILLUSTRATION
On July 4, 1776, fifty-six men gathered in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence. They knew full well what they were doing. They were defying the most powerful empire in the world. They weren't just signing a document; they were signing their death warrants.
As they prepared to put their names on the parchment, they declared:
"For the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
And many of them paid that price. Some lost their homes, their families, and their livelihoods. Some were captured, tortured, or killed. But they believed freedom was worth the cost.
