Text: Luke 16:19-31
INTRODUCTION
Take your Bibles this morning and turn to Luke Chapter 16.
This morning, I want us to begin a brand-new series of studies that will answer some of the BIG questions we all ask at some point, entitled "Big Questions, BIGGER God: Life, Death, and What Happens Next."
ILLUSTRATION
One Sunday morning, Pastor Jim decided it was time to tackle life's big questions from the pulpit. He'd been preparing a sermon series for weeks, and to kick things off, he thought he'd warm up the congregation with a little interactive moment. So, he stepped up to the microphone and said, "Folks, today we're diving into the mysteries of existence. Let's start simple-raise your hand if you've ever asked yourself, 'Why am I here?'"
Every hand in the room shot up-except for old Mr. Thompson in the back pew, who sat there, arms crossed, smirking like he'd just won Bingo. Pastor Jim, curious, called out, "Mr. Thompson, do you mean to tell me you've never once wondered why you're here?"
Mr. Thompson stood up, adjusted his suspenders, and said, "Nope, Pastor. I know exactly why I'm here. My wife told me at 8 a.m. sharp: 'Earl, you're going to church or sleeping in the garage tonight.' So, here I am-mystery solved!"
The congregation erupted in laughter, and Pastor Jim grinned, saying, "Earl, that's one big question down. Now let's see if we can figure out a few more-without Mrs. Thompson having to threaten us!"
Well, historically and philosophically - and even personally - there have been three big questions of life:
- "Where am I from?"
- "Why am I here?"
- "Where am I going?"
- Everybody from Aristotle to Tolstoy asked those types of questions, and French artist Paul Gauguin put them in a painting by basically the same name, "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?"
