Houston is one of the most religiously devout metro areas nationwide. We have Christian radio, Christian bookstores, Christian businesses, and a number of Christian universities and seminaries. Houston has 37 megachurches with attendance of over 2,000 people each week. Houston has several thousand churches.
From a Christian perspective this sounds great, but we must note that a recent article in the Houston Chronicle told how Houston has now been named the second most sinful city in America right behind Las Vegas.
"WalletHub released its list of the 180 most sinful cities in America, using specific criteria that compared key indicators of vices and illicit behavior."
Houston ranks #1 for sex trafficking cities in the U.S. Houston had the fifth-highest number of adult establishments per capita in the nation. Houston also ranked highly when it comes to Google searches for pornography, strip clubs and affairs, making it the No. 1 most lustful city on the list. Houston ranked 19th in the number of drunk driving deaths per capita and had the eighth-most residents with gambling problems. The city also ranked poorly regarding jealousy, which looks at theft and fraud, coming in at No. 5, and ranked No. 7 for vanity, which looks at local Google searches for things like cosmetic plastic surgery or tanning salons. Houston had the seventh highest number of mass shootings between January 2022 and July 2024, makes Houston an exceptionally angry place to live. Houston unfortunately, boasts higher than normal violent crimes and number of aggravated assaults.
In the midst of that, 2.1 million adults in the Houston region say they attend religious services never or less than once a year.
