3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Intro:
Jesus started with twelve disciples. Twelve. What was he thinking? Why would he think that twelve disciples would be enough to spread the gospel to the entire planet? Jesus knew what he was doing. His strategy was going to work. After all, Jesus is the Creator of all things, and Jesus is the one who would empower those twelve men to reach the nations.

While the twelve disciples were the original apostles and would be the ones to carry on the sound doctrine and truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we often overlook the other disciples who surrounded Jesus in his ministry and the birth of the New Testament church. There were many women who followed Jesus and were his disciples. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, who supported Jesus financially and accompanied him during his ministry. Other notable figures include Mary (the mother of Jesus), Mary of Bethany, and Martha. Priscilla, Lydia, and Junia are also recognized for their roles in the early church.

In our passage this morning, we encounter two more women, Lois and Eunice. These women were the mother and grandmother of Timothy, the disciple of Paul and pastor at Ephesus.
