Introduction
1.I went out to San Diego - probably 7 years ago to visit some friends. I went out there in the middle of winter; it was around New Year's time. I was so excited to get out of the cold in the Midwest to go out to San Diego. The temperature was about 70 degrees everyday - bright sunshine. I was with a couple of other guys that were Midwesterners too and we decided one day we should go to the beach. "We've got to go to the beach. We're out here in California. Let's enjoy ourselves."
So we put on our swimsuits and went out to Lahoya Beach - one of the most beautiful beaches you're ever going to see. We got out there and we're thinking, "Man, this is such a nice day...70 degrees, sunny. Probably going to be a lot of people out there." But, we're Midwestern people. We don't realize the Californian lifestyle and to them it's really cold out. The beach was just empty. Nobody was there. There were a few joggers that would come by all bundled up, but here my buddy and I come with our swim trunks on and no shirts. We're out there and if anybody didn't know we were from Chicago, they'd figure it out by looking at us.
But then they would have really thought we were dumb when we plunged into the water because there's these great waves coming in. We said, "Man, wouldn't that be just fun to frolic in these waves and so we plunged into the water. Well, it was 57 degrees - the water. It hurt. It hurt really bad.
We thought, "We're only here for one week. We've got to get in the water and enjoy the ocean." So we just kept playing in the water. After a few minutes my head was hurting just from the cold. Ice cold water. I got to feel a little bit of what my brother felt going through his navy seal training. They keep those guys cold too.
So we were playing and the waves were huge and we're having a fun time in the surf. You get out not too far and it drops off ...
