Text: Hebrews 1:1-2a
From the series: The Supremacy of Christ
A Study of the Book of Hebrews
As we begin our study, I want to take a few extra minutes and give you 3 introductory thoughts about the book of Hebrews.
First, this study of Hebrews will exalt the Christ. One of the great questions about the book of Hebrews is its authorship. For centuries, it was assumed to be Paul. Other theories include Luke, Barnabas, Apollos, Priscilla and Aquilla.
But we don't have to know who it's BY to know who it's ABOUT.
Hebrews is primarily about the sufficiency, sovereignty, and supremacy of Jesus Christ. We will, by God's grace, see Jesus lifted up and magnified on each page of this letter.
Second, this study of Hebrews will encourage the Christian. Hebrews 13:22 says that book was written as an exhortation, or encouragement. It was written to a persecuted people. And the indication seems to be that some of them, in their flesh, were discouraged and thinking of "turning back" on the Lord.
In the process of exalting the Lord Jesus, the idea is, if you turn away from Jesus, it's all downhill from there. He's the best.
By the way, Hebrews 13:22 also says, this is a "brief" letter, 13 chapters, 303 verses and nearly 7,000 words. It would take about 38 minutes to read this letter. So...a 38-minute message is called, "Brief" by the Holy Spirit.
So, if we spend 2 years in Hebrews and you wonder, "When will we be done with this book?" I might just say, "Briefly."
Thirdly, this study of Hebrews will educate the church. Hebrews is one of the most challenging books of the NT. Our study will stretch you in your discipleship. That's what this book is designed to do. It calls us to maturity of mind.
Hebrews 5:12 - For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the actual words of God, and you have come to need milk and no ...
