When I was a music minister, churches were having "worship wars." I saw a cartoon of two old ladies talking on the phone. One lady said to the other, "Martha, it's awful. They are putting new songs in the hymnal and placing old songs on the screen. It's getting to where I'm not sure which songs I'm supposed to be mad about anymore!"

But seriously, one of the "choruses" we would sing simply, actually written when I was in pre-K, said, "Jesus, Name above all names, Beautiful Savior, Glorious Lord, Emmanuel, God is with us, Blessed Redeemer, Living Word."

I love that little song and it is filled with wonderful truth. But we don't need a worship chorus to tell us that Jesus has a name that is above every other name.

Paul tells us that in Philippians 2 and the writer of Hebrews tells us in this text. And the reasons, as you would imagine, are really the same reasons between Philippians 2 and Hebrews 1.

Verse 4 says He has a name that is more excellent than the angels. By the way, we will deal with the ministry of angels next week in the balance of chapter 1. But in making this transition to the discussion of angels, the writer of Hebrews says that Jesus has a name that is above every other name.

Better than any priest, greater than any man, higher than any angel...A NAME ABOVE ALL OTHER NAMES. And he reveals 3 reasons for the greatness of that name.

1. Jesus is a God of Sovereign Power (2b)

If I were to ask, who is the greatest running back in college football history?
If I were to ask, who is the greatest pitcher in MLB history?
If I were to ask, who is the greatest political leader of all time?

In each and every case, there would be some argument or discussion. And those in the debate would tout stats and facts.

If I were to ask, who is the greatest god in all of the universe ...
