Title: Why Did He Come As A Man? (6 of 66)
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Hebrews 2:5-18
From the series: The Supremacy of Christ
A Study of the Book of Hebrews
Dr. Steve Lawson, one of my favorite Bible teachers, tells the story of being in a friend's home. The friend is a prominent leader in America and has an original painting of President George Washington in his home. It is estimated to be worth over $1M.
In an adjacent room, there is a painting of Mrs. Martha Washington, also valued at over $1M. But taken as a pair, nobody knows how valuable they are worth. There is not another "matched set" like it in America.
Each is valuable in its own right. But as a set, the combined value is far greater than the total of their individual values.
It is the same when we come to the first 2 chapters of Hebrews.
In chapter 1, Jesus is superior because of His deity.
In chapter 2, Jesus is superior because of His humanity.
Each is incredibly valuable. But put the 2 together? And the value is inestimable.
Humanity exists in BILLIONS of people throughout history.
Deity exists in only 3 persons. The Father, Son and the Spirit.
But Deity and Humanity only co-exist in one person. Jesus.
In chapter 1, Christ is seen as better than the angels because He is God. And as God, He did some things only God can do, things no angel could have ever done.
In chapter 2, Christ is seen as better than the angels because He is the perfect MAN. And as God in the FLESH, He did some things only a man could do. And again, these are things no angel could have ever done.
Now our question is not merely, "Why did Jesus come?"
If it were, we could answer that pretty easily.
1 Tim. 1:15 - Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
Mark 10:45...Luke 19:10...John 3:16-17...1 John 4:9
But the specific question is not merely "Why did He come?" But rather, "Why did He come as a man? Why did He come in a body of flesh?"
Why did God not just write His gospel in the ...
