Introduction
1. Daniel chapter 6 is where we start today. We're in this favorite passage for many people. You probably learned about it as a kid if you were around church at all. Even people who don't know much about the church are familiar, at least in a small way, with the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den. I'm going to pray and ask the Lord to be our teacher, then we're going to jump in.

2. Lord, thank you for this time that we can come together. Thank you for life, that you give us breath in our lungs to be alive today. I thank you for each person you've brought here today, who could be at other places doing other things, but they've set aside time now to come and study your word. I pray, Lord, Holy Spirit, that you would be our teacher, that you would come and speak exactly the things you want your people to know today. As we encounter your word, may our hearts and minds be open to receive it, and would you change us today to be more like Jesus. It's for his glory we pray this, amen.

3. We are in ancient Babylon, the ancient city the Euphrates River runs through. Now this great city is under the control of the Medes and Persians. At the end of chapter 5, we see that Babylon has fallen-the Babylonian Empire has come to an end. Now the Medes and Persians have moved in, and King Darius is in the palace, the great palace where Nebuchadnezzar once lived, where Belshazzar lived in chapter 5. Those guys are gone, and in their place, we have King Darius, appointed by Cyrus, the Persian king. King Cyrus appointed King Darius to govern Babylon. He's here in the palace, and we see our good friend, whom we've come to know now, Daniel, as well.

4. Daniel at this point is in his mid-80s or so. He served faithfully king after king, and now he's still in the king's palace under this new rule and reign of the Medo-Persian Empire. I don't know who needs to hear this ...
