Introduction
1. Grab your Bibles and go to Daniel chapter 11 if you have it-or your device. We're going to be in chapter 11 this morning, doing something a little different in the Book of Daniel than we've done in the past. Last week, we went verse by verse through the whole of chapter 10. This week, we'll just be in chapter 11 briefly, then bounce out to talk about a greater topic that I think comes up as you read it-the reality of evil and suffering in our world.
2. How old were you when you realized the world was evil, that bad things happen? I knew about bad things when I was a kid, but I had a really good childhood-great family, great parents. I went to church, learned about evil and sin in Sunday school and church, but in my insulated world, I had no problems. It was a great life growing up.
3. When I first realized the world could be bad was when I took a missions trip to Mexico at 18 years old-a short-term mission trip. By the way, we have short-term mission trip opportunities here at our church, and I encourage you to be a part of that. It opens your eyes to the reality of what believers around the world are going through and the hard times they face.
4. When I went to Mexico, I saw this little village in Aristos, Sonora. All these people had nothing, living in little shacks with dirt floors. The kids played on the dirt. The women of the village would come together every lunchtime and make a meal for us gringos. It was great food. Here they were, giving up of themselves to make food for us-giving up meals for somebody who had never missed one. It blew me away, the kindness and generosity of these people who were suffering. When the rains came, their houses flooded and turned to mud. It was an eye-opening experience.
