A Study of the Book of Hebrews

The book of Hebrews is a book of exhortation. But it is also a book of warnings. And at the conclusion of this major warning passage that began in the middle of chapter 3, he gives a word of exhortation and WARNING about the Word of God.

When we think of the Bible and preach about the Bible, it is almost always in a positive way. And certainly, when we SING about the Bible, it is always positive.

The B-I-B-L-E, yes that's the book for me...

Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so...

How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord is laid for your faith in His excellent Word.

One songwriter calls the Bible, "Truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity."

But here, the Bible is mentioned in the context of a warning.

To understand the warning, we have to think back on the context.

Don't be like unbelieving Israel at Meribah and Kadesh-Barnea.

After Israel "voted" in disbelief, God was angry with them.When Israel changed their mind, they decided to take the land. Moses warned them, "God isn't with you. You will fall by the sword. And that's what happened.

Now we are warned, if we drift from the Master, we too will face a sword. But it won't be the sword of a Canaanite, but of the Creator.

Ephesians 6:17 says we are to take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. But this doesn't seem to be a word to us about taking up the sword to do battle for God. Rather, it seems to be about God taking up the sword Himself to use it in discipline against us.

Still, there are some positive reasons to heed this negative warning about the Sword of God.

1. The power of the Word (The word of God is quick & powerful)
