I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus

How I've found in Him a friend so strong and true

I would tell you how He changed my life completely

He did something that no other Friend can do

One hymn writer said,

Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word,

Tell me the story most precious, sweetest that ever was heard.

If I tell you about Jesus, I'll be doing what I love best.

Because, I love to tell the story of unseen things above

Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love

Back in 3:1, the writer said that Jesus is "The Apostle and High Priest of our Confession." He spent chapter 3 and most of 4 describing the Lord as our Apostle. He will take the next 6 chapters to describe Jesus as our Great High Priest, starting with these 3 power-packed verses.

1. His Sovereign Position (14)

I am thankful to be in a pastor-led church. But there is only One ultimate leader of this church. And the LEADER of the church is the LORD of the church. Vs 14 gives a unique description of this LORD and His position.

A. Singular in quantity (a great high priest)

Any man in the family of Levi who could perfectly trace his lineage was eligible to be a priest. Although there is no exact number, it is safe to say that thousands of priests served in the tabernacle and temple.

But only ONE AT A TIME served as the high priest. 18 different men served as "high priest" at Solomon's temple with around 60 others serving in the rebuilt temples.

There were 28 high priests during the Roman period with Herod himself appointed 8 of them. And since the destruction of the temple in AD 70, the Jews have not had a high priest, because there has not been a temple where they would serve.

AND YET THERE IS ONE who stands above all others.

He's known by a lot of different titles:
