Title: Forward in Faith (19 of 66)
Series: The Supremacy of Christ
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Hebrews 6:13-15
Faith is one of the most important doctrines in the Bible. One of the pillars of the Protestant Reformation was Justification by GRACE ALONE through FAITH ALONE.
The writer of Hebrews will use the word "faith" 34x in this letter. That's as many times as the book of Romans, in which we learn so much about justification by faith.
And he will define for us that "Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)
But here, near the end of this 6th chapter, we are reminded that faith is not only the way we ENTER the Christian life (Ephesians 2:8) but it's how we CONTINUE in the Christian life.
FAITH is how we are born into His family as one of His children.
And FAITH is how we mature from spiritual infancy to maturity.
FAITH is so important that this book of Hebrews will later say that "without faith it is impossible to please God." (Hebrews 11:6)
Just like a person will not grow without food, and a plant won't grow without water, a Christian will not grow without faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7 - "For we walk by faith and not by sight."
The warning that began in chapter 5 and has continued here into chapter 6 is about turning back and falling away. And the writer wants to be clear...you do not mature spiritually by human effort, but you move forward in faith. Notice 3 things about moving forward in faith.
1. The persons that were mentioned (13)
There are actually two people who are mentioned in verse 13. At first glance you may only see one. But look more closely. There is Abraham, the great patriarch of the Hebrew people. And there is the First Person of the Godhead, God Himself.
And the Holy Spirit believes that if we will consider the interaction between these 2 "persons" it will help us move forward in faith.
A. Their Hebrew father
He was known as "Father Abraham ...
