One of the strange phenomena that often occurs in criminal investigations is the case of mistaken identity. Eyewitnesses who swear that a certain person was at the scene of a crime. Or that this person was the perpetrator of some act, only to discover later that the testimony was a case of mistaken identity.

Just 12 days ago, officials in Chicago released 44-year-oldKevin Dugar from prison after he served 20 years. Dugar's TWIN BROTHER has now confessed to committing the murder.

To be sure, there is a lot that may still unfold in that strange case. But I think we can understand how a person may be wrongly condemned or even wrongly released based on the actions of an identical twin. From their physical appearance to even some aspects of DNA, it's not far-fetched to think an identical twin could be mistaken for their sibling.

But in Hebrews 7, we have the unfolding story of what I believe is a mysterious, yet merciful, case of mistaken identity. This man first appeared in Genesis 14. He appeared again in Psalm 110, and he has already appeared a few times here in Hebrews. His name is Melchizedek. And he's likely the most important Bible character most people have never studied.

The writer of Hebrews first mentioned Melchizedek back in chapter 5. Then he chased a little "rabbit trail" because he said his readers wouldn't understand Melchizedek because they were too immature. And now after dealing with the call to Biblical maturity in chapter 6, he returns to the discussion of this mysterious man, Melchizedek.

And he looks so much like Jesus.

He acts so much like Jesus.

His description is so much like Jesus.

He's even described as having no father or mother, no beginning and no ending.

That's pretty impressive.
