Title: Christ, our Great High Priest (22 of 66)
Series: The Supremacy of Christ
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Hebrews 7:2-17
A lady was pulled over by the police for speeding. The officer asked her for her license. She said she didn't have one. She asked her for her insurance. She said she didn't have any. He asked for her registration. She said it was a stolen car. He asked if there was any contraband in the car. She said she had murdered her husband and his body was in the trunk.
The officer immediately called his chief for backup. The police chief arrived and asked her for her license. She gave it to him. He asked for her registration. She provided it.
He asked for her insurance card. She handed it to him. He asked to see in the trunk. There was a spare tire and tools.
The chief said, "My officer said you had no license, no insurance, no registration, and that you had a dead body in the trunk?" She said, "Yeah, and I bet he also told you I was speeding."
Well, I don't want to speed through Hebrews and that's why we are taking our time to full see a glimpse of Jesus. The overarching theme of Hebrews is the supremacy of Jesus Christ. There is none better, higher, or greater. In the opening chapters, the writer has set out to show that Jesus is:
Better than the prophets
Better than the angels
Better than Moses and better than Aaron
Better than Levi and all of the OT Levitical system that Levi represented...that Jesus is our great high priest.
In order to make that case, the writer continues with his discussion of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek lived as a contemporary of Abraham. He was a king of righteousness, the King of Salem, and a priest of the Most High God. He met and ministered to Abraham, received tithes from him, and blessed this great patriarch of Israel.
He is only mentioned in three places in the Scriptures.
Genesis 14, Psalm 110, and several times here in Hebrews.
Now, if all we knew was what we have in Genesis ...
