A Christlike Marriage That Works
Years ago, a pastor was counseling a couple named John and Martha who had been married for over 50 years. Their marriage wasn't perfect, but it was powerful. When asked the secret to their long-lasting love, John said, "I made a covenant, not a contract. A contract is based on performance; a covenant is based on promise."
Martha chimed in, "We made it our mission to out-love and out-serve one another, just like Christ did for the church."
John was a man who modeled Ephesians 5:25, consistently putting Martha's needs before his own. He would often say, "My role is to make sure she becomes all God wants her to be." He prayed over her, worked hard for her, and made sacrifices without drawing attention to himself.
Martha, in turn, embraced her role as described in Ephesians 5:22-24, not out of obligation, but out of love and respect. She uplifted John, honored his leadership, and supported him in ministry and in life. Their love was not built on fleeting emotions, but on the enduring example of Jesus Christ and His love for the Church.
That marriage preached a better sermon than many pulpits ever could. It showed that when Christ is the foundation, even two imperfect people can reflect a perfect Savior.
